Apple is reportedly considering to replace Intel processors in its Mac personal computers with new chips similar to the ones used in the iPad and iPhone.

According to Bloomberg, Apple engineers are confident that the chip designs used for its mobile devices can be enhanced to a newer version to run its desktops and laptops.

The iPhone maker started using Intel chips for Macs in 2005.

Apple switched to Intel chips because they generated less heat than the products built by Motorola and IBM that the company had used.

Sergis Mushell, an analyst at Gartner was quoted by Bloomberg as saying that "Apple is a trendsetter, and once they did their own chip many others may pursue a similar path."

"If mobility is more important than functionality, then we will have a completely different environment than we are dealing with today," Mushell said.

Earlier this year, Apple revealed that it was working on porting OS X to prototype Macs running ARM processors.

Based on ARM designs, Apple would create hardware which will theoretically run cooler with less power demands, and make it easier to get OS X and iOS closer together in terms of cross-compatibility of software and code.
